Our department has a first class faculty that is dedicated to teaching and providing excellent patient care. Our services include in-patient rehabilitation and out-patient clinics. Our in-patient units are at several hospitals: Jackson Memorial Hospital and Health South. We also have voluntary faculty who have services at the Miami VA. Jackson Memorial Hospital is a large county hospital with 4 CARF-accredited services: Spinal Cord Injury, Traumatic Brain Injury, Pedi-Rehabilitation, and Comprehensive. Jackson has a large Level I Trauma Center and is the major teaching hospital for our residents along with the VA. Our faculty also have clinics that range from Deerfield and Plantation, as well as, Coral Gables. Additionally, we have a large out-patient practice also on the Medical Campus, located at UMHC and perform a large number of procedures for pain each year.
Our trainees include 18 PM&R residents and 2 Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) Medicine fellows. The faculty are heavily involved with teaching them as well as medical students and observers. Each year, our trainees give research presentations and posters at our annual Research Day. We also invite nationally recognized researchers to present at our Research Day and at our department Grand Rounds.
In 2011 we were successful in getting funded by NIDRR as an SCI Model System (www.scimiami.med.miami.edu) with Dr. Elizabeth Roy Felix as Principal Investigator (PI), who oversees the administration of the research projects and data collection along with the assistance of co-PIs, Dr. Mark Nash and Dr. Kevin Dalal. In 2012, Dr. Doug Johnson-Greene successfully competed for a TBI Model System as PI with Dr. Elizabeth Felix as co-PI. These two grants have been fabulous for such a young department which was established only in 2002. We also conduct research with the University of Pittsburgh in an SCI Collaborative grant on wheelchair training/mechanics. Other studies include the Miami Project’s Schwann Cell Transplantation safety trial and a multi-center study of intrathecal Gablofen for spasticity lead by Dr. Seema Khurana.
While we continue to strive for excellence, we also aim to have fun in all we do! I hope you enjoy reading about our faculty and their achievements. Thank you for your interest in our department.
